Strata Corporation Investments

A number of years ago, legislative changes were made that limited the freedom of strata corporations to invest their reserve funds in a wide array of investments.  For the most part, as a strata corporation, you are limited to the safest possible investments, which also typically means the lowest possible returns.  There was some confusion in the province around the changes, as they required that investments only be held at CDIC-insured institutions.  In many cases, the limit of insurance, at credit unions, for example, is $100,000.00, so invested amounts were limited to that amount in those institutions.  Recent clarifications have shown that you are free to invest as much as you wish in such institutions, knowing that your insurable amount will be limited to $100,000.00.  So you can take some risk!
